"A casa é o mundo".
Praticamente um mtv cribs meets found footage transcendental.

Hi, I'm Manoel de Oliveira and this is my crib, let's go check it out.
Manoel de Oliveira, the most well known filmmaker coming out of Portugal (together with João César Monteiro perhaps) made his most intimate and personal film in the 1980's and kept it to not be seen by the general public for a long long time. We visit his house, a monumental and beautiful estate he will soon have to leave. It was the nostalgia of a place and its memories that prompted him to make a film about what such meant for him, while also making a biography of himself... sort of.
He had vast experience on many areas, but was no "jack of all trades,…

I'm not able to use a star-rating system for such a personal movie like that from the master

Manoel de Oliveira’s long-hidden documentary is an intimate self-portrait of a master, flooded with ruminations on spaces, cinema, and life under a dictatorship. Laid over a lilting Beethoven concerto or the patient whirr of a film projector, past memories startlingly coalesce into concrete poetry.
Now showing (almost) globally here.

6th Manoel de Oliveira (after Doomed Love, Francesca, Aniki-Bóbó and The Strange Case of Angelica)
At once a portrait of a house and an autobiography of its owner. Made in 1982, De Oliveira held it from release until his death in 2015, significantly longer than probably even he imagined. Why he did so is unclear. The film suggests that it's to preserve the memory of a house, one that Oliveira lived in for forty years. It's evident that the location was the source of great happiness for the filmmaker; it's immaculately clean and stuffed full of beautiful art and furniture. Sitting on the crest of a hill, it's surrounded by gorgeous trees and nature, making it one of the most…

“It’s a film about myself. Maybe I shouldn’t make a film like this, but it’s done.” In its own ghostly way, one of the great dark jokes of film history; a legendary filmmaker’s deathbed confessional, not yet knowing he’d go on to live long enough to make twenty-five more films. Saying farewell to a beloved home, to the private worlds it sustained and the bigger, more calamitous ones it offered haven from, to all the fictive worlds borne out of its tranquil, upper-floor study. “A great nostalgia takes hold of us. It should be beautiful, but it isn’t.” The film’s at its most haunting when Oliveira pores over his beloved memories and relations (rather than his crudely old-fashioned philosophizing about…

every form of art in a way, for me, is a reflection of the artist. i love deeply personal films & memoirs are the type of books i enjoy reading a lot — something about memories and the way people visit them always fascinated me somehow. manoel de oliveira visits his memories by literally visiting the house he grew up in, which is no longer his. accompanied by beethoven; visit, or memories and confessions is sort of a docu-drama. it starts with a man and a woman entering his house, and from time to time de oliveira speaks directly to the camera: he talks about his passion for cinema, his love for his wife and everything that made him who he is today. an achingly beautiful film that i'll definitely revisit soon…
