Synopsis
Love... Sex... Life... Death. In this house it's all on the table.
A group of idealistic, but frustrated, liberals succumb to the temptation of murdering rightwing pundits for their political beliefs.

"You left-wingers make me wanna puke. Never take a real stand. Stand that you'd be willing to..."
"Die for?"
"No, boy. Dying's easy. Ain't nothing heroic about dying. But if you can take a stand for something you'd kill for, that's something. Something special."A Film by Stacy Title
(Warning: spoilers ahead.)After Bill Paxton passed away in February 2017, I spent a month rewatching all my favorite films of his and discovering a few new ones. One of the best that I saw in that period was The Last Supper, a wickedly dark comedy directed by Stacy Title and co-produced by her and husband Jonathan Penner, whom I didn't realize until a couple of years later is way more…

"That's what's wrong with you liberals." - Zachary Cody,
Politics!!!! Yelling!!!!!
Smarter than I expected a dark comedy about a group of grad students killing conservatives to be. The cast is really good, the script is kind of funny, and I really enjoyed the ending.
For liberals, and people that hate liberals.

In grad school, ideas can harden,
So students will need to parden.
If hosting a meal,
The greatest appeal,
Is showing off the new garden. -

interesting... i wanna give it the benefit of the doubt but it feels like centrist propaganda to me. at best, it is a sometimes-funny, probably defeatist satire of being stuck in centrist hell. also the treatment of its only main character of color (courtney b. vance) left a bad aftertaste. mostly fun to see the guest stars pop up at the dinner table, like jason alexander, simply credited as "anti-environmentalist."

Listen to my guest spot on Hotbox the Cinema, in which we discuss the late Stacy Title's filmography.
This almost anticipates Eli Roth in its use of genre for provocative (and pessimistic) social diagnosis. I appreciate that it often withholds or ambiguates its ethical positions.
I read the finale as an argument that performative centrism is the greatest of all political evils, but interpretations might vary. This is quite sturdily made, especially for a debut feature, and the bookends in particular are expertly constructed. Stacy Title was a very interesting filmmaker ... she left us far too soon.

Review by Hunter ᴴᴰ ★★★
After a group of grad school liberals unknowingly invite a racist truck driver over for Sunday dinner things escalate into an accident that might not only change their lives, but also their morals. And their garden?
A satire with clever dialogue that is as relevant today as it was in the mid ninties. Entertaing performances that handle the sharp, if not over the top, writing with a shoutout to young Cameron Diaz. The tone could be unbalanced and over political for some audiences, but as a dark comedy I thought it worked well enough. The overall progression of the script does become disjointed. Although, I found the direction to be creative with some strange montages, symbolic imagery, and motifs of tomato plants.
The Last Supper is ripe for a smarter and less muddled remake. Get it, ripe. Tomatoes.
*sqeezes tomato passionately in my hand

Review by Justin LaLiberty ★★★★
Cameron Diaz and her liberal grad student friends start offing racist, homophobic, sexist conservatives (including Bill Paxton and Jason Alexander) by inviting them over for dinner and poisoning them and then burying them in the backyard as tomato plant fertilizer. Ridiculous and timely, with more than a few quotes that feel plucked from our current zeitgeist.

Review by Dawson Joyce ★★★★
Surprisingly much better than expected from the director who went on to helm The Bye Bye Man, The Last Supper is a dark, biting, and absolutely hilarious black comedy chock-full of strong performances and clever dialogue, as well as a well-crafted story that's frighteningly relevant in our current day and age.

From the director of the Bye Bye Man.............................. I'm speechless.
Definitely check it out this hidden gem, that's for sure. Solid cast, well paced and entertaining. Sort of like 12 angry men or Sunset Limited but with a body count. For the most part its just in one location.
RIP Stacy Title.
